Notes

A four-day walking trip through Bangkok's older riverside quarters, compiled from Riri Travels' trip with her parents, taken before Thailand's mango season. It skips most of the standard temple circuit and spends most of its time in Songwat and Talat Noi, a historic warehouse street just south of Chinatown now filling with independent shops and cafes, with the Big Buddha at Wat Paknam on day two and a full Sunday at Chatuchak to finish.

Highlights

  • Phra Buddha Dhammakaya Thep Mongkol at Wat Paknam. The largest Buddha statue she has seen. She had missed it on an earlier Bangkok trip because it was under repair, and was glad to catch it with no scaffolding this time.
  • Song Wat Station (Things made by hand). Her favourite store in Songwat. Everything in it is handmade, which she called a refreshing change from the mass-produced items everywhere else.
  • Chatuchak Weekend Market. Her favourite market in all of Bangkok. She said the range of items still surprises her.
  • KubKao' KubPla, Siam Paragon. She said she still thinks about the tom yum goong. There is always a queue.
  • Massage Land @Songwat. 350 baht for an hour of foot, neck and shoulder massage. She recommended it outright, and on the last day said she would pick it over CHUPRAN, the second place they tried.

Prices and hours are as stated in the video and may have changed. The video does not give the travel dates. The trip took place before Thailand's mango season, and the itinerary runs Thursday to Sunday.

The walking legs within each neighbourhood are from the video. The video does not show how they crossed the city between districts, so the transport mode on those longer hops is a sensible option for the distance rather than the route she actually took.

This itinerary was compiled by AI from the video and may contain errors. Check with the venues and official sources before you travel.

Where to stay

Bubble Humble.BKK

3 nights

USD 73 per night for three people. Riri said she was not expecting much and was pleasantly surprised by how nice it is; the whole space including the bathroom is incredibly clean, and the owners are kind and friendly. Drinks in the fridge and the snacks are free.

The in-house cafe, Humble Roaster, serves guests free coffee. She had the dark roast and called it delicious.

It sits directly above the Ong Ang Canal, and the owners have hosted a photowalk there for photographers.

Day by day

Day 1

Krua Apsorn @Dinso

Thai restaurant

Dinner, recommended by their hotel as being nearby. It has been on the Michelin Guide for years.

They ate deep-fried king fish, green curry with fish balls, stir-fried cowslip flower, a fluffy crab meat omelette and heart-shaped rice. Riri said every dish was delicious and flavourful, and named the crab omelette and the king fish as her favourites.

Democracy Monument

Monument

A short night walk from dinner to see the monument lit up.

Din Restaurant and Jazz Bar

Restaurant

Live jazz runs Thursday to Sunday. The bar is part of the Baan Tuk Din Hotel.

They had cocktails, mocktails and a pecan tart. Riri said the soft music floating out was too inviting to resist, called it an atmospheric place for a first night in Bangkok, and said the dark, moody interior makes it a good night cap.

Day 2

Photo spot for the Big Buddha at Paknam Temple

Place of worship

The viewpoint across the canal from the statue. You walk to it through a residential area.

Riri had missed this site on her previous Bangkok trip because it was under repair, and was glad to see it with no scaffolding. She called it the largest Buddha statue she has seen.

Long boats leave from here to the floating market for 200 baht.

Wat Khun Chan

Buddhist temple

Passed on the walk between the viewpoint and the temple, a temple with many ornate animal statues.

Phra Buddha Dhammakaya Thep Mongkol (Wat Paknam Big Buddha)

Place of worship

Cross the bridge from the viewpoint side to reach the temple itself. Seen up close, the Buddha's eyes are open and looking down at you.

HUGS SONGWAT CAFE

Cafe

Brunch at a Japanese-owned cafe on Soi Charoen Phaniang, Talat Noi. The scrambled eggs plate is 340 baht, about USD 10.

Riri said the ingredients are really fresh and the flavour combinations well thought out, and noted it is on the pricey side, though she added that most western-style brunch places in Bangkok sit in that range. This is where she calls Songwat her new favourite area in Bangkok.

Vanich House

General store

722 Soi Wanit 2, Talat Noi. Riri said it looks like an old building from the outside but is actually a general store selling all kinds of knick-knacks. Inside there is a vintage Casio watch section and a ceramic painting workshop.

The building was an old machine shop, now refurbished into a cafe, shop and community hub. She said people in Bangkok are very creative at renewing old spaces.

onest at Talat Noi

General store

760 Soi Wanit 2. Riri could smell the fragrance from outside. It sells scented products for the home and body, with a handwash station for trying the soaps and lotions. She liked the cleaning sprays most, calling them a nice change from the usual citrusy ones.

Slow bar Chocolate

Bakery

258 Soi Wanit 2. Riri called it a cute chocolate store, but said she needed something more refreshing than chocolate in that weather.

Coconut cart, Talat Noi. A street cart with a blue and yellow umbrella selling fresh coconuts for 40 baht each. Riri's tip: if you see it, get one, because her coconuts are so delicious.

Massage Land @Songwat

Massage · 1 hr

329-339 Trok Saphan Yuan, Samphanthawong. 350 baht, about USD 10, for one hour of foot, neck and shoulder massage. Best to prebook via WhatsApp.

Riri called it the perfect way to end a long day of walking, said the environment is clean, quiet and relaxing, that all three masseuses were skilled and professional, and that the struggle is trying not to fall asleep so you actually feel the massage. She recommended it outright, and on day four said she would pick it over CHUPRAN, the second place they tried.

Gourmet Eats, Siam Paragon

Food court

The food hall on the ground floor of Siam Paragon. The elevated skywalk brings you straight in.

Riri called it one of their favourite places to eat. It has a food court with a wide selection plus individual restaurants serving Thai food.

KubKao' KubPla Siam Paragon

Thai restaurant

Dinner inside Siam Paragon. There is always a queue.

They ate a flower omelette, tom yum goong, deep-fried snapper with tamarind sauce, stir-fried vegetable fern in oyster sauce, and rice.

Riri said the tom yum was absolutely delicious and that she still thinks about it, and pointed out the big chunks of coconut meat. The snapper was deep-fried to perfection. One bowl of rice is not enough.

Day 3

Ong Ang Canal

Tourist attraction

Directly beneath their accommodation. Riri said it gets livelier in the afternoon once the food stalls are set up, and that it is an interesting area for street photography. It gets quite warm at midday.

Piccolo Vicolo Cafe at Wang Burapha-Samyot

Cafe

775 Maha Chai Road. Riri described it as three floors of lush greenery. Sandwiches are 240 baht, either sundried tomato with smoked chicken, or truffle and cheese.

She said the interior is really aesthetic, that the window seats are perfect for the view of the plants, that the third floor is as easy on the eyes as the others, and that the coffee is pretty good. They arrived early and it was not yet busy.

Garcon dept Songwat

Store

817 Song Wat Road. Riri described it as Bangkok's cool-kid multi-label concept store. She tried on and loved a silver necklace.

Her description of Songwat as a whole. A historic riverside street just south of Chinatown, once a trade hub lined with warehouses, now filling with new businesses. She called it an urban rejuvenation that makes it a fun place to stroll, eat and browse.

SongViet at SongWat

Vietnamese restaurant

819 Song Wat Road. Riri walked past this one without going in, and used it to point out how many restaurants the street has.

SIAM ENAMEL WARE CO.,LTD.

Manufacturer

821-825 Song Wat Road. Mainly wholesale, but they occasionally sell retail, so if you are lucky you might get enamel ware cheap. Tiffin meal carriers are 350 baht. Riri said she loves their pastel colours.

Clay Songwat

Educational institution

1176 Song Wat Road. A pottery store and studio. Riri said you can find lots of hidden gems here, and that it might take a while to go through everything.

Copenn Songwat

Clothing store

1452 Song Wat Road. A minimalist fragrance store, and one of the original shops that sparked the revival of the Songwat area. Riri said both the store and the products look like they could be part of a gallery, and that it is a great stop if you want a new scent.

Song Wat Station (Things made by hand)

Home goods store

123 Trok Chaiyaphum. Riri's favourite store in Songwat. Everything in it is handmade, which she called a refreshing change from the mass-produced items we see everywhere today.

Rattan bags, jewellery made from natural materials, leather elephant keychains, a coconut back-scratcher, ceramics.

Songwat 100-year gate (ทรงวาด ประตู100 ปี)

Tourist attraction

The little alleyway of small shops off Song Wat Road.

Oyster and Things @songwat

Gift shop

1194 Song Wat Road. Riri called it a treasure trove of coastal-themed goods with an abundance of seashells, said "it's giving grandma-chic", and warned it is a place you can stay way too long in.

Wanjai Cafe House @SongWat

Cafe

1190 Song Wat Road. Mango sticky rice. She had the larger portion. The place had gone viral on social media around the time of her visit.

Riri said the mango sticky rice is truly delicious and the mangoes so sweet, and noted it was not yet mango season in Thailand.

Road Of Cinnamon

Store

A shop on Song Wat Road that Riri lists among the stops on this walk.

Soul Songwat

Community center

The community centre on Song Wat Road. It has a very old and slow elevator, and towards the end you get a view of the Chao Phraya River.

Museo di Oyster

Home goods store

1300 Song Wat Road, on the second floor of the Soul Songwat community centre. Riri described it as the sister store of Oyster and Things with more refined items, and called it a museum of all things seashell. There is a bar where you can customise cutlery, which she said looks difficult to clean.

PLAY art house

Art gallery

993 Song Wat Road. Riri called it a wonderful art gallery with different exhibitions through the year, and a good place to hide from the heat. The exhibition during her visit was about folklore and myths.

SOMA Bangkok

Thai restaurant

Dinner at Siam Patumwan House, 414 Phaya Thai Road. A modern Thai restaurant run by a Michelin-recognised chef. A friend recommended it to her.

They ate stir-fried crab with curry powder in a coconut tuile, grilled crispy pork belly with maekwan fish sauce and pineapple, salted mackerel cakes on fried rice, stir-fried chayote with sugar snap peas and oyster mushroom, and a spicy smoked fish broth.

Riri said the atmosphere is beautiful. The pork belly is a signature and delicious. The fried rice was her favourite dish of the whole trip, with a lovely umami flavour from the Chinese olives. The smoked fish broth was way too salty, and she said the place suits those with a heavier taste bud.

Day 4

Chatuchak Weekend Market

Market

Weekend only. Riri's favourite market in all of Bangkok. She said she is always surprised at the range of items and that every stall sells something different.

Her tip: the part shaded under rows of trees is her favourite, and cooler.

Stalls she bought from that have no separate listing: pyjama sets at 200 baht each, about USD 6, the same style at 250 baht, and a stall she liked for breezy cotton tops.

Duck Noodle

Restaurant

293 Phahonyothin Road, Lat Yao. A well-known duck noodle shop. Riri said the duck was very tender and the broth clean and flavourful.

Coco JJ Coconut Icecream

Cafe

Coconut ice cream with toppings, inside the market. Riri said it is on the sweeter side.

Guate Leather JJ weekend market

Clothing store

Riri said she loves this shop for their unique leather bags.

Miruku

Coffee shop

Fresh strawberry milk. Riri called it a great spot for dairy lovers.

Red Building Vintage Chatuchak

Shopping mall

511 Kamphaeng Phet 2 Road, in the Bangsue Junction building, right in front of Chatuchak market. Five floors of vintage collectibles, furniture, clothing and antiques. Second floor fixtures, lighting and jewellery; third floor mostly vintage clothing; top floor a panoramic view over Chatuchak market.

Riri said her eyes did not know where to look.

Here Duan (Banthat Thong)

Thai restaurant

1982-1984 Wang Mai, Pathum Wan. Well known for creamy crab omelette rice. Usually very busy. They came between lunch and dinner to avoid it.

They had the signature omelette rice and stir-fried seafood noodles. Riri said the crab omelette is silky and creamy and the noodles have a fragrant wok-hei taste with lots of shallots.

CHUPRAN | Health & Massage @Phra Nakhon

Massage spa · 1 hr

392/16 Wang Burapha Phirom, near their hotel. Prices from 340 baht, about USD 10, for one hour.

Riri's verdict is mixed: how good the massage is depends on which masseuse you get. Hers was great but her parents did not enjoy theirs, so she would recommend Massage Land @Songwat over this one.

ICONSIAM

Shopping mall

The 7th-floor terrace, for the Chao Phraya River nightscape. It closes the video.

Prep list

Prebook Massage Land @Songwat via WhatsApp
Chatuchak Weekend Market runs at weekends only, so put the market day on a Saturday or Sunday
Din Restaurant and Jazz Bar has live jazz Thursday to Sunday only
Expect a queue at KubKao' KubPla in Siam Paragon
Here Duan is usually very busy; the creator went between lunch and dinner
