Fukuoka 3-Day Solo Trip: Hakata Ramen, Nakasu Yatai, Tanushimaru Kappa Town & Ukiha Old Town — Cindy and Dion's Trip
Notes
Compiled from Cindy and Dion's three-day Fukuoka trip in May 2026, which Cindy travels solo after Dion flies home to Seoul on the first day. She stays in a capsule hotel in Nakasu, spends two days on Hakata and Tenjin cafes, bakeries and hot pot, and takes a day trip by train to the kappa town of Tanushimaru and the old post town of Ukiha. It suits a solo, food-focused visit with one countryside day and no rental car.
Highlights
- Ramen Kanetora, Hakata Station. Cindy and Dion's favourite tsukemen, with a branch on the station's ramen street. They still rate it the best tsukemen they have had.
- Tanushimaru Station. The pastel green and yellow station of "Kappa Town", which Cindy found the most unique sight in town.
- Ukiha old town. An Edo-period post town on the river, where Cindy found a bakery by chance and a Meiji-era family home open to visitors.
- Coffeesha Noda. A Daimyo kissaten open since 1966, with siphon coffee and firm pudding. Cindy says it is the kind of place you want to keep coming back to.
- Motsunabe Ichifuji, Tenjin. Beef-intestine hot pot with a single-person portion, the meal that closed her trip.

Where to stay
The Millennials Fukuoka
(Nakasu, a few minutes' walk from Ichiran HQ)
2026-05-21 check-in → 2026-05-24 check-out, 3 nights. A modern capsule hotel whose lobby feels more like a coworking space. She booked late, so only the mixed-gender room was left, which felt a little awkward at first. Luggage space and a safe sit under the bed; a phone in the capsule controls the room and raises or lowers the bed, and a "bed alarm" lifts the bed to wake you. Toilets and showers are shared. The 2nd-floor coworking lounge, with portable charger rentals, suits people working on the road. Rental bikes cost ¥400 an hour or ¥1,500 for 7:00–23:00. Breakfast is Western or Japanese; she had the Western one, served like a course meal.
Day by day
Day 1
Fukuoka Airport → Hakata / Tenjin
The video doesn't show an arrival. From the domestic terminal, the subway station is inside the building and the Airport Line reaches Hakata in about 5 minutes and Tenjin in about 11. From the international terminal, take the free shuttle bus to the domestic terminal (about 10 minutes) for the subway, or a Nishitetsu bus straight to Hakata Station from stops 6 and 7.
Manly Coffee
An Australian-style roastery in a leafy alley, known for light roasts, serving espresso and Aeropress. Too hot to sit outside that day. Cindy and Dion had a filter coffee with Papua New Guinea beans, which she found lightly peachy, and a cold brew made with koji milk that has a hint of ginger.
Ramen Kanetora
(Hakata Station ramen street)
Hakata Station has its own ramen street, and Cindy and Dion's favourite tsukemen shop has a branch on it. The queue was long but moved fast. They ordered the premium spicy tsukemen at ¥1,700 and the spicy tsukemen at ¥1,350. The dipping soup is very thick and full of flavour, and it is still the best tsukemen they have had.
Pokémon Center Fukuoka
(Hakata Marui, same building as imonne)
They stopped here for a small gift for a friend's child, and one thing was for Dion.
imonne Hakata
They had the matcha gelato mochi, and Cindy found it very chewy.
United Nations
Specialty coffee in a shop done entirely in black. They shared an espresso banana shake and a cafe latte here, the last stop before Dion left for Seoul, and she rates the coffee as decent.
Ichiran HQ
A few minutes' walk from the hotel. Every night at 8 PM there is a dance performance on the building's terrace. It lasts about 15 minutes.
Nakasu yatai street
At night the streets get much livelier, with yatai food stalls along the road. She doesn't name a stall.
Day 2
Hakata → Tanushimaru (limited express)
A sunny day before forecast storms made her swap plans and do the day trip first. After breakfast she set out around 11:30 for the roughly 1.5-hour ride to Tanushimaru, on the 12:14 limited express for Beppu via Kurume. She hadn't known she would need an extra ticket on top of her IC card and paid cash on board: ¥2,300 in total, a ¥1,300 fare adjustment from the IC card plus a ¥1,000 unreserved limited-express ticket.
Tanushimaru Station
Tanushimaru calls itself "Kappa Town", after the turtle-like yōkai of a local river legend, and kappa turn up all over town. For Cindy the station building itself is the most unique of them, cute in pastel green and yellow. Trains are infrequent, so she had less time here than she wanted.
Kapateria
A cafe right next to the station with kappa merchandise and a kappa-themed menu. She had the kappa gelato, ¥500, a little kappa made of matcha ice cream with cereal and biscuits on top.
Tanushimaru → Chikugo-Yoshii (train)
Back on the train from the other platform, heading for Ukiha.
Yoshii Shirakabe old town
(from Chikugo-Yoshii Station, Ukiha)
Ukiha's old town was a post town in the Edo period. Many buildings were rebuilt after a large fire in 1869 and are well preserved. She found the river lush and the town peaceful, like anime scenery.
Bread Mocca
A neighbourhood bakery she came across by chance. The shelf includes a Totoro cream puff at ¥240. Staff recommended the mentaiko baguette, mentaiko being a Kyushu speciality; it has a spicy kick, and she calls it "a random find but so so good".
Igura no Yakata
An old house open to the public, once home to a wealthy Meiji-era family. The interior is traditional but as grand as a mansion, and she says places like this inspire her.
Chikugo-Yoshii → Kurume (train)
Ticket to Kurume ¥660, bought at 16:38. She enjoys the train ride after a stretch of road trips.
Kurume Station
She changed trains here to get back to Fukuoka. The train system takes some figuring out, she says, and sometimes you have to accept a detour. She waited an hour for what she thought was the right train before realising it was the wrong one, with a cafe au lait made with Kumamoto milk to pass the time.
LaLaport Fukuoka
She found her way back to the city eventually and ended the day at the mall's life-size Gundam.
Day 3
Pain Stock Tenjin
A bakery near the hotel with a line already waiting before opening, rustic and warm inside. It is also known for mentaiko baguette, but she had had one the day before and picked something else; it was crowded, so she took it to go. The choco France (¥356) has a crisp crust and a rich chocolate filling, and she calls the bread amazing.
Juliet's Letters
A stationery shop that reminded her of the film Letters to Juliet. It sells paper goods, washi tape and writing supplies, and one corner holds postcards printed from old photographs. It left her with the sense that handwritten letters still matter here.
Coffeesha Noda
A kissaten open since 1966, with an antique interior that feels like stepping back in time. The coffee is made with a siphon. She had the Noda blend with fresh cream on the side and a pudding. You add the cream yourself to build your cup, and the pudding is the firm kind only a classic kissaten makes. It is the kind of place she wants to keep coming back to, and she takes its long run as a good sign.
Motsunabe Ichifuji Tenjin
Motsunabe, a hot pot of beef intestines, is another Fukuoka dish she counts as a must. There is a single-person portion, with miso or shoyu broth. She had miso and added champon noodles, and the miso broth went well with the tender motsu. She ends the trip saying Fukuoka might be her favourite region for a food trip.
Prep list
Carry cash for the limited express to Tanushimaru. Her IC card didn't cover it and she paid ¥2,300 on board. |
Check train times around Tanushimaru, Ukiha and Kurume. Trains are infrequent, and she lost an hour waiting for the wrong train at Kurume. |
Book The Millennials early if you don't want the mixed-gender room; booking late left her no choice. |
Get to Pain Stock before it opens. A line had already formed. |
