Notes

Compiled from Suitcase Monkey's six-day Slovenia road trip in late May 2025. A self-drive loop out of Ljubljana through Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj, over the Julian Alps to Bovec and the Soča valley, into the Brda wine hills, then out to Postojna Cave and the coast at Piran. He calls Slovenia Europe's most overlooked destination, and the country is small enough that six days of driving used barely half a tank of petrol.

Highlights

  • Lake Bohinj. Slovenia's largest lake, 30 minutes from Bled. Suitcase Monkey calls it "arguably most impressive", and says the open space was a welcome change of pace.
  • Klobasarna, Ljubljana. An affordable way to sample traditional dishes. The Carniolan sausage lacked in presentation but made up for it with its juicy taste, and became the dish they reordered most across the whole trip.
  • Museum of Contemporary History, Ljubljana. €6, and in his words the best value for money spent that day. It gave a whole new perspective on the country's timeline from the First World War to independence in 1991.
  • A vineyard estate in Brda. The six-room, adults-only stay he calls one of the finest in all their years of travelling, where the husband-and-wife owners made them feel more like guests than paying customers.
  • Postojna Cave. The world's first underground cave railway, opened 1872, running almost 4 km into a 24 km cave system 120 m deep.

  • Original video, published 18 July 2025, filmed late May 2025.
  • Prices and hours are as stated in the video (May 2025) and may have changed. Two changes are already known: the Brda vineyard estate now appears to take bookings for the entire building only, and the Bled summer toboggan was closed at the time of filming.
  • This itinerary was compiled by AI from the video and may contain errors. Check with the venues and official sources before you travel.

Where to stay

Hotel Triglav Bled

1 night

€221 for a lakeside balcony room with breakfast (£190 / $260), sauna and pool access included.

On the north-west side of the lake, close to the station and to the quiet western shore. Suitcase Monkey jokes that it borrows furniture from his grandmother and a hallway from The Shining, and says they booked it mainly for the balcony views. Breakfast, a mix of multi-course local dishes and a cooked à la carte menu, was "one of the best starts to our day, all week".

Per his written guide, parking is included though not guaranteed, and it is a 30-minute lake walk, or a drive or taxi, from the main town.

Triangel Boutique Hotel

1 night

€255 for a mountain balcony room with breakfast (£220 / $300), spa access included. Dinner, four dishes with wine, €72 (£62 / $85).

An hour by car from Bohinj, at Gozd Martuljek on the edge of the Julian Alps. Suitcase Monkey rates it their second-best stay of the trip. Underfloor heating, an open-plan Michelin Bib restaurant where dinner became one of the best of the trip, and a wellness centre with traditional sauna, steam room, infrared sauna and a cold bucket shower that was, in his words, bizarrely empty and put him entirely at ease. Parking included.

Apartmaji Prton Bovec

1 night

€100 for an apartment studio with a parking space (£86 / $117).

Suitcase Monkey treats it as just a quick rest stop. His written guide calls it a no-frills apartment, a minute from the centre.

Peterc Vineyard Estate

1 night

€230 for a room with breakfast (£200 / $270). A six-room, adults-only vineyard estate in Brda, the region often called Slovenia's Tuscany, looking out over Slovenian and Italian hilltop towns.

Suitcase Monkey calls it one of the finest stays in all their years of travelling, and says so with little hesitation. The husband-and-wife owners' attention to detail made them feel more like guests than paying customers, everything is built around their home-grown wine, and there is an honesty bar you help yourself from. Their evening cheese and wine charcuterie board, with the view and the silence, was in his word heaven.

Booking has changed since filming. Suitcase Monkey has added a note to his own written guide saying the estate now appears to take bookings for the entire building only. Check before planning around it.

Vila Piranesi

1 night

From Suitcase Monkey's written guide: booked mainly because it comes with a free parking space at Garage Fornače, a few minutes from the shuttle drop-off into Piran. No price is given in the video.

Day by day

Day 1

Getting in. Ljubljana city centre is about half an hour from Ljubljana Airport (LJU). Suitcase Monkey does not say how he covered that leg. The airport sits around 26 km north of the city and is served by a public bus and by airport shuttles, so check current operators and fares before you travel.

This whole trip is self-drive. They rented a car and used barely half a tank of petrol across six days.

Prešernov trg

Tourist attraction

The most central hub in Ljubljana and the natural place to start.

Suitcase Monkey says the city is compact enough that it is perfect for exploring on foot.

The riverside and the old-town streets. Walking the river and the narrow streets either side is, in his words, the obvious highlight of the city. Stari trg is the notable shopping street.

Allow 1 to 3 hours.

Ljubljana Castle

Castle

The dominant building of the city, on the hill above the centre. Ticket with audio guide €19.00 (£16.30 / $22.40). Allow 1 to 2 hours.

Suitcase Monkey says the exteriors are free to roam and have enough to see without paying for entry, but full access worked out for them for the history, even if it felt a little pricey. On the 4D film and its 3D glasses, his verdict is that "you still feel such a fool for putting them on".

Ljubljana Castle Funicular (lower station)

Castle

€3.30 (£3.00 / $4.00) for a two-minute ride up to the castle.

The alternative is a steep ten-minute walk. In Suitcase Monkey's words, taking it means you will want to justify why "you almost had a heart attack walking up here in the first place".

Klobasarna

Restaurant

Traditional Slovenian dishes with outdoor seating, just down from the castle. Carniolan sausage €9.50 (£8.20 / $11.20), štruklji €6.50, ričet €6.50 (£5.60 / $7.60 each).

Suitcase Monkey calls it an affordable way to sample a variety of traditional dishes. The sausage lacked in presentation but made up for it with its juicy taste, the bread, mustard and horseradish were a perfect pairing, and it became the dish they reordered most across the whole trip.

Captain's Cabin

Bar

An afternoon stop by the river for a glass of white wine.

Tivoli Park

City park

The park on the way out to the museum.

Suitcase Monkey recommends taking the slightly out-of-the-way walk through it rather than heading straight there.

Museum of Contemporary History of Slovenia

History museum

Timeline exhibits running from the First World War through to independence in 1991. €6.00 (£5.00 / $7.00). Allow 1 hour.

Suitcase Monkey calls it the best value for money spent that day, and says it gave a whole new perspective on Slovenia's timeline. Highly recommended.

Where they stayed in Ljubljana: Brick Ceiling Apartment. €96 per night (£83 / $112). A ten-minute walk from the centre, in a quiet area near the train station.

Suitcase Monkey describes it as a quaint IKEA-inspired kitchenette studio, and says €96 is on the lower end of what to expect for a well-rated central stay in Ljubljana.

Day 2

Lake Bled

Lake

Reached by car from Ljubljana.

Suitcase Monkey: "Lake Bled is Slovenias most iconic panorama, especially if you've ever seen an LG TV screensaver."

On the island church, he notes nobody knows exactly when one was first built there, but it is around a thousand years old, with the renovations that produced its current form happening in the late 1600s.

Mala Osojnica – First View Point

Scenic spot

The classic elevated view over the lake and the island. Per Suitcase Monkey's own written guide the climb takes 15 to 20 minutes from the lake. You can keep going higher for a better view, but it takes a lot longer.

Bled Panoramic Viewpoint

Observation deck

A wooden boardwalk stretch along the lake.

Watching the world go by from spots like this was, in Suitcase Monkey's word, magical.

Zaka Bar / Lounge bar Plaža (western side of Lake Bled)

Bar

The remote western end of Lake Bled, and the part Suitcase Monkey says he will remember: the peace and quiet.

Per his written guide they stopped here for an hour, and the Pletna boats depart from in front. The video labels it Zaka Bar and his guide calls it Lounge bar Plaža. Same place.

Pletna boats to Bled Island, and why they gave up. The most popular way to reach the island, around €15 return. Suitcase Monkey says the boats are as linked to Bled as gondolas are to Venice.

Worth knowing before you queue: they only take passengers once completely full, and after an hour of waiting his never filled.

The eastern side, the main town, and the toboggan. Expectation-setting from Suitcase Monkey: the town side is pleasant enough, but a lot more unassuming than he had imagined.

His written guide also flags the Bled summer toboggan, which he liked the look of but found closed during their visit. Check before you count on it.

Kavarna Park

Restaurant

Kremšnita, the Bled cream cake, €6.50 (£5.60 / $7.60). This is the only place you can still get the original taste, because the recipe was first made famous right here about 70 years ago.

Suitcase Monkey describes it as similar to a mille-feuille but less crisp. Their visit was hit by a sudden rainstorm, and he warns the weather here changes fast.

Day 3

Lake Bohinj

Lake

Slovenia's largest lake, a 30-minute drive from Bled. Allow 4 hours or more.

Suitcase Monkey calls it "arguably most impressive", and says the open space was a welcome change of pace.

Triglav National Park. The country's only national park, marking the south-eastern end of the Alps and the setting for the next three days.

Suitcase Monkey calls it a paradise for nature lovers, hikers and mountain towns. Mount Triglav itself is Slovenia's highest point, at over 9,000 feet.

The lake boat across Bohinj, €14 (£12 / $16) for the return journey.

Per Suitcase Monkey's written guide it runs roughly once an hour between Ribčev Laz and the western shore, so you can walk one way and ride the other.

Camp Bohinj

Campground

The western dock end of the lake, where the boat turns around.

Valley station – Vogel Cable Car

Ski resort

Return ticket €29.50 (£25 / $35). They did not ride it.

The plan was to go up for Mount Triglav, but on local advice they checked the live weather cams, saw a heavy cloud build-up and skipped it. Suitcase Monkey's tip: check the cams before you pay.

Zlatorog Fairy Trail

Hiking area

The 2 km trail they walked instead of the cable car.

Suitcase Monkey calls it great for families, blending nature and storytelling with local fairy tales, characters and mini activities.

Cerkev sv. Janeza Krstnika

Church

The stone-bridge church on the eastern side of the lake, back where they started.

Restavracija Kramar

Restaurant

Lakeside lunch. Two mains with drinks €39 (£34 / $46). Pasta and risotto, eaten under an umbrella in the rain.

Suitcase Monkey calls it a cosy rain hideaway. His written guide adds that it is cash only "if I remember correct", so treat that as a maybe and carry cash.

Day 4

Kranjska Gora

Locality

An alpine ski town, a short drive from the hotel.

Suitcase Monkey is candid about it. They were there out of season, so it obviously is not a must-visit, but it was nice enough to get acquainted with the area.

Vršič Pass: check it is open before you plan around it. The country's highest mountain road, popular for scenic drives, day hikes and cyclists.

Suitcase Monkey never drove it. After breakfast they found the entire road closed for the whole month, and the only option was a 30-minute detour through Italy that brought them back into Slovenia near Bovec. Closures are seasonal and change year to year, so check the road status rather than relying on this snapshot.

Bovec

Locality

The destination at the end of that detour.

Suitcase Monkey calls it a small town you can walk across in about ten minutes, but the most condensed activity hotspot he has come across, with paragliding, white water rafting and more.

Zipline Slovenia, Adrenalin Park Bovec (Učja valley)

Adventure sports center

Around €79, allow 3 hours. Multiple operators run various activities here. Billed as Europe's largest zipline park: 10 wires across 4.5 km, rising 200 m above the Učja valley.

Suitcase Monkey liked it precisely because ziplines are normally short, and ten gave him time to take in the landscape. On-screen warning during the ride: do not drop your phone.

Pizzerija Črna Ovca

Pizza restaurant

Pizza back in Bovec after the border crossing and the ziplines. No price given.

Day 5

Soča River Viewpoint

Tourist attraction

€5, allow 90 minutes. Boardwalks above the river.

From Suitcase Monkey's written guide: there are two car parks nearby. They used the more southern one because the bridge at the closer one was being rebuilt, so check whether that work has finished.

Slap Kozjak (Kozjak Waterfall)

Tourist attraction

Reached on foot along the gorge from the viewpoint, into a cave-like chamber. Per Suitcase Monkey's written guide there is a €5 charge before the waterfall.

The Soča River. It runs 138 km along much of Slovenia's western border, starting high in the Julian Alps.

Suitcase Monkey says its distinct emerald hue and the number of easy access points make it pretty much unmissable.

Tolminska korita (Tolmin Gorges)

Nature preserve

€8, allow 2 hours. Tunnels, suspension bridges and the gorge itself.

From Suitcase Monkey's written guide: there are P1 and P2 car parks. They walked from P2 because P1 was full, and the longer walk was pleasant anyway.

Day 6

Postojna Cave

Nature preserve

Cave admission with train from €33 (£29 / $39). Allow around 2.5 hours. Less than an hour from Ljubljana.

Opened in 1872, this is the world's first underground cave railway. Its almost 4 km of track is the entry point to a 24 km cave system 120 m deep, toured on foot with a guide.

Suitcase Monkey says it is well worth a visit for the 200 years of human history and the thousands of years that preceded it. His warning: this is one of Slovenia's most visited attractions, so book in advance to get a time slot.

Piran

Locality

Slovenia holds only 42 km of coastline and Piran is its most popular town.

Suitcase Monkey describes it as a mixture of medieval, Venetian and Mediterranean, and simply a joy to get lost in.

Garage Fornače

Parking garage

Park-and-ride for Piran. The town restricts car access, so you leave the car here and either take the shuttle bus, which runs every 15 minutes, or walk about 20 minutes in. Both details come from Suitcase Monkey's written guide.

Tartinijev trg

Historical landmark

The main square.

By this stage Suitcase Monkey says they were pretty exhausted, and being back in a populated, energetic town gave them everything they were looking for. They sat out with a beer and a cocktail.

Pirat Piran

Restaurant

Fish and potatoes by the marina at sunset. No price given.

Suitcase Monkey ended the evening at this "supremely tasty fish restaurant".

Prep list

Book Postojna Cave ahead to secure a time slot
Check the Vršič Pass is open — it was shut for the whole month of their visit
Check the Vogel live weather cams before paying €29.50 for the cable car
Pletna boats to Bled Island only leave when full — they waited an hour and gave up
Carry cash for Restavracija Kramar at Bohinj
Rent a car — several stops on this route assume one
Piran restricts car access: plan to park outside and ride the shuttle in
